SEGMENT 3

Ecological Spine

Segment 3 lies within the jurisdictions of Taylorsville to the west and Murray to the east. The southern edge is bounded by the midway point between Murray Taylorsville Road and W Taylorsville Expressway and the northern edge by W 4170 S. Although one of the smaller segments, it includes the Freedom Shrine that sits along the existing JRP Trail on the western side of the river and has two boat launches towards the southeastern side of the river that provide key sites for connectivity and programming. The segment’s character is also defined by a strong residential community presence with the apartments complex towards the northwest end.

existing conditions

This area marks a transition between more developed parks to the south and broader open spaces to the north.

Primary opportunities

Due to the limited and narrow area around the River, an ecological spine that has a core focus of riparian and habitat restoration would greatly benefit the environmental and riverine conditions. These enhancements not only improve the ecological health of this segment, but they would also improve the look and feel of the existing JRP Trail and proposed trail connections.

The enhanced two-trail system would also create more accessible connections to the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as consider the nearby strategic redevelopment opportunities.
